Let's answer some questions

1. Calculate
2. Offset
3. Reduce
4. Get certified

In case the organization possesses all the requirements to be certified, processing of preset files takes a few hours of work while validation takes up to 48 hours.

In case the organization does not possess one or more of the requirements the time can fluctuate greatly and take weeks. In this case, the Climate Standard team is available to answer your questions.

And, by signing a statement of intent, the organization will be able to boast the temporary title of “in the process of certification”. That gives the opportunity to use that wording and the Climate Standard logo for a limited time in awareness and communication campaigns.

Climate Standard requires an annual corporate carbon footprint in case of “Brand Climate Neutral” certification or a product carbon footprint in case of “PRODUCT Climate Neutral” certification.

In the case of corporate carbon footprint, the organization must submit reporting divided by emission categories as described in the GHGP and ISO 14064 guidelines.

In the case of product carbon footprint, the organization must submit reporting divided by categories as per GHGP and ISO 14047 and the total value of emissions associated with the total products manufactured during the year.

It is not necessary to have your corporate/product carbon footprint certified. If you have a certified carbon footprint it is definitely better but let’s stick to the principle of ” Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”.

Certifying a carbon footprint costs a lot of money and you should spend that budget on doing emission management (offsetting and reducing).

You will have the chance to improve your carbon footprint year after year.

No need, we will provide you with all the preset files to fill out. It will be easier for you to fill everything in and for us to analyze the data through our automated process and identify any missed data.

Offset is when someone use specific certificate, called “carbon credits”, to counterbalance its own emissions.

Therefore, to reach climate neutrality companies have to buy externally those carbon credits. Each carbon credit represents 1 metric ton of CO2e eliminated from the planet.

No. Climate Standard does not sell or trade carbon credits. However, the team can support in identifying green projects that best fit with your organization.

In case the organization decides to buy the credits on its own, Climate Standard can make its accounts on the reference registries available to “retire the credits” i.e., remove them from the registry and in this way use them for offsetting.

The requirements are generally divided into 4 demands:

  • Credits must be certified by international bodies such as Verified Carbon Standard, Gold Standard, PlanVivo or PuroEarth.
  • Credits must be from projects located in developing countries (as defined by the IMF), except for long-term carbon removal projects.
  • Credits must have been issued within 4 years in the case of “avoided or reduced emissions without storage” projects and 7 in other cases.
  • Credits from “avoided or reduced emissions without storage” can offset up to 50% of total emissions.

We will provide you with preset files to fill in by entering unique codes/serial numbers of the credits and their characteristics.

To these should be added proof of purchase (such as the receipt/invoice of purchase) and proof of withdrawal from the reference register.

In addition to calculating and offsetting emissions already produced, the organization must submit an official memo with future and SMART emission reduction targets. Such “pledges” are specific, measurable, assignable, realistic and time-bounded targets.

Organizations must submit 2 reduction targets in the case of annual turnover below 50 million and 3 targets in the case of turnover above 50 million.

Unlike Brand Climate Neutral certification where “pledges” apply across all categories of corporate emissions, Product Climate Neutral certification can voluntarily focus on reducing emissions from the product life process only.

Why turn something beautiful into something shady?

After validation, Climate Standard creates a web page dedicated to the organization (and product) to publicize how the company has achieved climate neutrality.

This serves to maximize transparency, reduce risks and engage your stakeholders.

Your status lasts for 1 year and is verified only once, at the certification application stage. You will not have to worry about tedious and costly unexpected on-site checks.

At the end of the validity year, however, the process will have to be repeated. It will be up to the organization to reapply and adjust to any changes in certification requirements.

Max reliability for customers

The information associated with the company or the single certified product will be shared on a dedicated page.

Here your consumers will be able to find the estimated carbon footprint for the current year, the projects used for the carbon offset and the company reduction plans.

The certification is based on the verification of 3 key requirements:

calculate, offset, reduce.

Calculate the annual carbon footprint of the product/company

Offset the CO2e emitted with high-quality carbon credits

Plan to reduce emissions and publish a company commitment

in details:

Preface

Climate Standard recognises two types of certification: climate neutral companies and climate neutral products. The difference only concerns the application:

  • In the case of a company, the required carbon footprint is the total of the company’s operations, offsetting is 100% of emissions and the reduction must be planned taking all operations into account.
  • In the case of a product, the carbon footprint required is that of the product, the offset concerns 100% of the product’s emissions, and the reduction can be planned on the certified product alone.

Calculate your carbon footprint

Organisations interested in obtaining certification in 2022 as a company or for one of their products have as a first requirement to measure the emissions (carbon footprint) produced in the previous year.

CLIMATE STANDARD requires a calculation of the emissions associated with the product, service or entity to be certified. The calculation is based on the method proposed by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most widely used reporting standard in the world.

The accuracy of the data and monitoring depends considerably on the size of the organization as described below. We understand the difficulty of reporting emissions and are ready to support you right away to make the process as simple and convenient as possible.

So if you invoice less than 10 million euros, CLIMATE STANDARD accepts an assessment of the emissions of your products through scientific reports, recognized calculators, geographic and sector benchmarks. In that case, we also accept calcusations based on online tools such us “2030calculator”.

We will be satisfied with the certificates of origin that prove the truthfulness and origin of this energy.

How does the calculation work?

CLIMATE STANDARD requires a calculation of the emissions associated with the product, service or entity to be certified. The calculation is based on the method proposed by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most widely used reporting standard in the world.

How accurate do you have to be?

The accuracy of the data and monitoring depends considerably on the size of the organization as described below. We understand the difficulty of reporting emissions and are ready to support you right away to make the process as simple and convenient as possible.

So if you invoice less than 10 million euros, CLIMATE STANDARD accepts an assessment of the emissions of your products through scientific reports, recognized calculators, geographic and sector benchmarks.

I only buy energy from renewable sources, how can I show you?

We will be satisfied with the certificates of origin that prove the truthfulness and origin of this energy.

Offset with high-quality credits

The second requirement is the compensation of all greenhouse gas emissions of the product/entity (to be certified) through the purchase of certified carbon credits.

Attention: credits must comply with the certification requirements to avoid greenwashing practices.

Certified carbon credits are tons of CO2 absorbed or not emitted by projects with a positive impact on the climate.

All organizations are encouraged to purchase credits with CLIMATE STANDARD, especially for those that fall into the “small business” category, but the purchase of credits with third-party providers is still accepted if the requirements listed below are met.

The requirements for the validity of neutralization are necessary to ensure the high quality of carbon credits. They are very precise but, at the same time, a little incomprehensible to non-experts.

If you have not yet purchased certified credits we can help you in the process. In case you want to buy credits from specialized traders, they will have no problem meeting our validity criteria.

The criteria range from the use of certified credits only to the financing of only projects located in developing countries (excluding carbon capture and storage projects), to a minimum limit on the purchase price of the single credit, to an age limit, up to the characteristics of the credit mix to offset.

The necessary documents concern the purchase operation, a payment receipt and the characteristics of the supported projects.

Where / how can carbon credits be purchased?

The necessary documents concern the purchase operation, a payment receipt and the characteristics of the supported projects.

Commit and plan to reduce emissions

The 3rd requirement concerns the creation, implementation and monitoring of an emissions reduction plan which may concern the single certified product or the entire organization and which we will call BRP (Business Reduction Plan) for simplicity.

Companies that certify their products/services for the first time have up to 6 months to submit and implement the BRP.

You can focus on creating a BRP for the single product, certified service.

Focusing on the single certification will help you create a structured method that you can later extend to all the other activities of your organization.

Despite this, it is recommended, whenever possible, to plan the emissions of the entire organization and its supply chain and extend the BRP as much as possible.

This depends a lot on the size of the organization. In any case, CLIMATE STANDARD has in its interests the support of organizations that want to reduce their emissions.

For companies with a turnover of less than 10 million euros, the BRP to be presented can also be very simple but always remains measurable and achievable.
The more the size of the company grows, the more the BRP proves to be structured and characterized by objectives, actions, intermediate milestones and timelines.

The Business Reduction Plan must have a duration between 1 and 3 years, annual objectives, starting from the date of the presentation of the certification application, and final ones. These objectives must be SMART, that is: specific (Specific), measurable (Measurable), achievable (Achievable), realistic (Realistic) and defined in time (Time-bound).

Of course yes. From the certification application you have 6 months to submit a PAR that meets the right requirements. This is because writing a realistic and implementable plan takes time. Don’t worry, it is neither an expensive nor an impossible operation.

Do I have to make a plan to reduce the emissions of the certified product or of the entire company?

You can focus on creating a BRP for the single product, certified service.

Focusing on the single certification will help you create a structured method that you can later extend to all the other activities of your organization.

Despite this, it is recommended, whenever possible, to plan the emissions of the entire organization and its supply chain and extend the BRP as much as possible.

How much detail do you need to go into?

This depends a lot on the size of the organization. In any case, CLIMATE STANDARD has in its interests the support of organizations that want to reduce their emissions.

For companies with a turnover of less than 10 million euros, the BRP to be presented can also be very simple but always remains measurable and achievable.
The more the size of the company grows, the more the BRP proves to be structured and characterized by objectives, actions, intermediate milestones and timelines.

What are the characteristics of the Plan?

The Business Reduction Plan must have a duration between 1 and 3 years, annual objectives, starting from the date of the presentation of the certification application, and final ones. These objectives must be SMART, that is: specific (Specific), measurable (Measurable), achievable (Achievable), realistic (Realistic) and defined in time (Time-bound).

I don’t have a reduction plan yet, can I still apply for certification?

Of course yes. From the certification application you have 6 months to submit a PAR that meets the right requirements. This is because writing a realistic and implementable plan takes time. Don’t worry, it is neither an expensive nor an impossible operation.
